We're on a mission to end
fistula Stigmatization, one woman at a time.

Although we primarily focus on obstetric fistula often resulting from childbirth, we also support women with Fistula resulting from rape, cancer, early marriages and female genital mutilation. We provide the much-needed awareness and timely responses with a view to safeguarding the dignity and wellbeing of the survivors and also making Fistula a normal condition that women need not be suffering from.

Testimonials:

I want to enlighten and encourage someone that Obstetric Fistula is a treatable condition. I got fistula in 2007 after the birth of my first born baby at the age of 20.I noticed changes when my baby was 2weeks old. I could not control both gas and stool and seemingly passing through my vagina instead of the rectum. It was a terrible experience and my life changed drastically and completely. I could not go to public places due to embarrassment and my closest family members and friends had different opinions. Others suggested that the cause of my situation was due to that fact that l did not use a tummy trimming belt after birth.l believed them because l had no information or knowledge about fistula. My sexual life changed, I was traumatized, depressed to a point of being suicidal. I got the second and third born children in the same situation. In 2018 I got to know that I had fistula through my cousin with whom I had shared the story with. Thank God for Dr.Mabeya and the team of Women's Gynocare and Fistula center for restoring my happiness. I know the pain, I know the stigma. Kindly any woman with symptoms of Fistula reach out for treatment.

"I developed very low self-esteem. I was fearful of being around people, because of this situation. Finding treatment was not easy but I am grateful that eventually I was able to get the treatment needed to correct the condition. The surgery was a success", Christine says.

I came across Sharon Korir ( Founder of SAWFF) on Facebook sharing her own story with a YouTube link in 2021. I reached out to her and was amazed at how SAWFF came through for me. Through an outreach program, some women who had suffered from Fistula shared about their experiences and challenges especially how uncomfortable it is to have such a condition. Knowing that I was not alone was a relief.

Elizabeth Kache, a proud mother of four, is a fistula survivor and a true champion. Her journey with fistula began during the birth of her youngest son. The baby was in a breach position, and a Caesarean section (CS) was planned. However, complications arose when her water broke prematurely, and she couldn't make it to the operating theatre in time. As the situation became critical, her doctor instructed her to push, and with his help, the baby was delivered feet first. Unfortunately, this resulted in a severe 4th-degree tear, leading to a fistula diagnosis.Despite the immense challenge, Elizabeth’s strength and determination never wavered. She was fortunate to connect with SAWF, where she underwent successful fistula surgery. Today, Elizabeth is free from fistula and uses her story to inspire and encourage other women who suffer in silence. Her message is clear: there is hope, support, and life can return to normal, even after such life-altering experiences.

The Save a Woman Fistula Foundation (SAWFF) will host a two-day Fistula Awareness Campaign in Kericho County on November 28–29, 2025. This community-centered initiative seeks to educate women, girls, and the wider community on the causes, prevention, and treatment of obstetric fistula while tackling the stigma that isolates survivors. The campaign will combine medical screenings, survivor testimonies, educational sessions, and media outreach to reach over 1,000 participants, including patients, survivors, health professionals, and local leaders. By promoting safe childbirth practices, encouraging antenatal care, and highlighting the availability of free treatment at Litein Mission Hospital, the campaign will empower women to seek care and inspire communities to support them.

Beyond awareness, the campaign focuses on healing and reintegration, offering survivors psychosocial support and economic empowerment to rebuild their lives with dignity. With an expected reach across all six sub-counties of Kericho, the initiative aims to screen and refer women for treatment, strengthen community health networks, and drive long-term behavior change around maternal health. SAWFF calls on individuals, organizations, and partners to support this life-changing mission—together we can restore hope, health, and dignity to women and girls affected by fistula.

Sharon Korir

Our Founder

Sharon Korir is an Obstetric Fistula Survivor, diagnosed with the condition after the birth of her second child. She is a mother of two, Lawyer by profession and currently a Law Teacher.

After being discharged from hospital with her baby, a few weeks after, she realized she had a problem when passing urine and feacal matter. She had no control and the passage routes seemed interchanged.

After seeking medical attention for this embarrassing condition, she was diagnosed with Recto- Vaginal fistula. This was a traumatic experience, which made her totally lose her self esteem and she isolated herself completely. She had to undergo a corrective surgery and many months of doctors’ visits until she got healed. She really wanted to question God but all in all she give him back all the glory. She named her son Israel meaning (Wrestled or Triumphed with God). It wasn’t easy but all glory goes to Him.

Sharon’s foundation is a safe space for Fistula patients and survivors to share, and encourage each other as well as seek solutions to their condition. It is also a means for creating awareness that seeks to inform, educate and bust myths around obstetric fistula.

Women also build relationships and connections which bring about mental healing since we are cultured in a society where Sexuality matters is considered a taboo.
